Everyone Loves a Fireman: How We Got To Hang Out With Firemen For An Evening

It’s not very often that you get to spend an afternoon hanging out with firemen and sharing a lot of laughs with the people who keep us safe and never brag about it.

So, one Saturday afternoon we bothered a group of four firemen who were kind enough to open up the doors to their station and socialize with us. We asked them about their jobs, their favourite places to grab food in Toronto and what they love to cook… when they actually get a chance to cook. They told us some behind-the-scenes stories of the weird ways people set their homes on fire. Some cautionary tales, and some just downright odd stories.

Why were we there? Well, we brought along our Inner J bars, because Captain Jeff (in the middle) is a big fan.  Inner J bars keep you going providing you with the right amount of carbs and protein to keep you going throughout the day.

But we were also there to learn from each other. We learned about their work, they learned why carbs and protein and fats matter.

Did you know firemen work in 24-hour shifts? So yes, these men and women need energy without the CRAZY sugar high and the sluggish feeling afterwards. Would you want your fireman to be feeling sluggish as he’s rushing to put out an emergency? No way! And this is one of the reasons Captain Jeff – who has been a fireman for over 20 years by the way – loved our bars. He met Justyna at a Healthy Planet store while she was sampling Inner J bars, and thought they were great. He likes that Inner J bars are clean, wholesome snacks with fresh, raw ingredients and have high protein content. And they’re easy to take from the gym to the job. So, he invited her to see the fire station and discuss healthy, clean eating (I tagged along).

The communal kitchen at the fire station is where we gathered around as Nathan, another fireman on duty , was whipping up a batch of oatmeal cookies. We tagged along and watched as he mixed the ingredients. Justyna pulled out a bag of Giddy Yo Yo banana spears.  (we’re BIG fans of Giddy Yo Yo products here at Inner J and have been known to eat an entire bar  to ourselves…oops!). They were a big hit amongst the firemen who had never tried them before, and we added them to the batter which would add extra sweetness and nutrients from the bananas.

Captain Jeff (R) and Justyna, founder of Inner J bars. Yes, in full gear!

And the results are below. They were delicious. We want to thank Captain Jeff and his team for welcoming us into their “home” for that day and letting us see where they work. We hope you felt Inner J-ized throughout the night! Thanks gentlemen, and we’ll see you again soon.
